Matakana Coast Summer Dog Walks
Let's face it, information about where to take your dog for a walk in summer during the day around Warkworth and the Matakana Coast is hard to find... hence this page has been created just for you.
Auckland City Council's restriction of dogs on Rodney beaches from 10am to 6:30pm means there are only a few places where you can have dogs off-leash. Please respect these areas and let's all do our part in keeping them clean and beautiful for dog owners to use for many years to come. Be a tidy kiwi!
Rodney wide beach access rules are as follows:
Summer: Labour Weekend to 1st March. Dogs are allowed on the beach before 10am and after 6.30pm only.
Winter: 2nd March to Friday before Labour Weekend. Dogs are allowed off-leash at all times.
Have control of your dog at all times. This means you need to be able to get them to come to you when you call them. It goes without saying that our responsibility as a dog owner means we need to pick up their poos - regardless of size. If you see one that has accidentally been left behind, please don't leave it there for non-dog lovers to complain about.
Always be mindful of stock and birdlife. The last thing you want is cattle getting spooked and running through a fence. It could end up very costly for you.
I have purposely left Pakiri Beach off this list although it does allow dogs off-leash. The New Zealand fairy tern breeds at Pakiri and is probably our most endangered indigenous breeding birds with a population of only 45 and 12 breeding pairs. I simply don't think it's worth the risk.
In saying all of this, if you would love your dog to go on a true doggy adventure while you're at work or visiting the Matakana area, let them come and hang with the Doggy Beach Break family for a day. It's a really fun filled time at secret spots with lots of exploring, pack socialisation, creek crashing and bush bashing. Guaranteed they come home possibly a little dirty, more confident, happy and definitely tired. Please feel free to check out the rest of this website or the Doggy Beach Break Facebook page for further information.
Enjoy!
